3 Ways to Up Your Game in the New Year

Happy New Year from my family to yours! I hope you all had a fabulous holiday and New Year’s Eve. As we strut into January with a tight hold on our New Year’s resolutions we may already have feelings of overwhelm and defeat. Yep, even on the 2nd day!  In my opinion, it’s not about hitting a weight goal, getting that promotion or looking like a “10” every time I leave the house. It’s about continuous growth in all ways possible to live a better, happier and more satisfying life. I’m not as far as I’d like to be, but I’ve come a long way, babes!

Happy New Year from my family to yours! Rayne Parvis, Goldie, Alley, Frida and Matt Parvis in Studio City, Ca.

Here are 3 easy way to be a “better you” by upping your game in 2018:

  1. Add a New Tool to Your Lifestyle: Write down 5 things you can learn that will make your life more stylish, fulfilling or a tad more awesome. What skill have you always wanted to have but have been scared to take the plunge? Pick at least one and do it! Sign up and pay for the training today. If you pay for it now, you will find time to make it happen. This may be taking a photography class at a local junior college, getting certified for that side hustle you’ve been thinking about or taking a sewing class so you can tailor your own clothes. Whatever your soul has been yearning for dive in. In December, I took a personal styling business class at School of Style. I’m already a certified Style Coach but the more I know about my craft the more I can give back to my clients and those around me. It’s always scary to invest a big chunk of change. My thoughts were what if I already know everything? What if it’s a waste of money? Blah, blah, blah. I was so inspired by learning new ways of doing business and services I’ve completely revamped my structure for Style By Rayne. Yay!

  2. Let Go of Whatever is Not Inspiring You: Before you can operate at your best, letting go of ill-fitting clothes, self-doubt, relationships you’re holding onto that no longer serve you or your universal purpose and whatever may be hanging out in your house…junk drawers, second bedroom that is filled with years of “maybe I’ll need that one day items” and/or storage units you’ve been paying monthly for that you haven’t been to in a decade. The less you are carrying into your future the more room you’ll have for new fabulousness. Whatever you need to do to get this done…do it darling! Take a look at a recent before and after a closet audit. Creating space is one of the keys to less stress for your mind.

  3. Hire Someone to Help You Be a Better You: When we try to save money and do everything ourselves we get less done. Admittedly, I am a total repeat offender in this category. I’m hiring a PR consultant to help me with PR…duh. Yes, I can sit there hour after hour, learning about this craft, read books on how to do it myself and spend endless hours researching who, what, when and where I should submit to. However, I don’t wanna! I’ve tried. I’d rather be shopping, volunteering or working on my business which I enjoy doing. What has taken me hours and hours to do, my PR expert knows the remedy and the future success recipe instantly. Another example, for my styling clients, I can take one look at a photo and know in under 3 seconds how we can improve their overall appearance. So, yes, hire that experienced expert to get you on your personal success track. Experts to consider; personal stylists(for real!), personal trainers, matchmakers, professional photographers for your business, branding agencies, nutritionist, professional organizers, dating coaches, interior designers and business coaches. What To Wear Camping…and Glamping

My memories of camping as a kid consist of freezing cold showers, wearing the same dirty smoke filled clothes (because I packed the wrong items), sitting around the camp fire looking at the same loved ones for days and having the worst tossing and turning night’s sleep with a with a rock poking my back from the forest floor. I am happy to share with all the people who never took to roughing it in the outdoors; camping is not what is used to be! You can attend your families adventure and enjoy Mother Nature with hot showers, boat rides, fishing, hiking away from your campsite, a cooked meal from a campground restaurant and converse with other humans at the lake’s bar in style.

My husband’s family kindly introduced us to Annett’s Mono Village in California.  We borrowed a pop-up camper, packed up Frida(our 4-pound rescue dog) and drove 6 hours to a non-campers idea of  a camping paradise aka glamping! Can I get an Amen to no cabin/tent fever?! I highly recommend this camping and RV haven.

9 KEY ITEMS TO PACK FOR YOUR CAMPING TRIP:

  1. Hat(baseball, trucker, bucket or fedora). Not only will these protect yourself from

getting sun burned, but they hide oily and/or dirty hair.

  2. Cotton Tanks Top, T-shirt and Thermals. Cotton helps keep your skin cool and from being stinky like polyester.
  3. Vest. I love my vest(pictured below)! It’s a great way to layer a flannel or t-shirt depending on the temperature.
  4. Shorts.
  5. Jeans(optional). I like to protect my legs from mosquitos at dusk.
  6. Sweatpants/shirts(for nights and mornings). Due to freezing nights, sweats are recommend as pajamas. Sorry guys, ladies you can leave your cute lingerie night gowns at home.
  7. Shoes You Don’t Care About: Tom’s or old work-out shoes are awesome.
  8. Flip-flops: Wear flip-flops in the public showers. You don’t want to catch a foot fungus.
  9. Uggs: The temperature dropped from 80 degrees during the day to 45 degree at night. You are going to want to slip into something warm and comfy.

BONUS: Dr. Bonner’s Pure Castile Soap: You can use it to wash your face, body, dog, vegetables and dishes. And yes, you can shave with it too!

In addition, don’t forget your basics like underwear, lots of socks, sunglasses, sports bra(for the ladies), sunblock, bathing suit, quarters for the showers and your toiletries.

Happy Camping and Glamping!

I know! We all lead such busy lives that are hair, style and certain body parts can be neglected. Keeping the following 5 simple style tips and tricks in mind will help you look EFFORTLESSLY put together. In addition check out 6 more tips to LOOK and FEEL lovely on August’s McLaughlin’s video that I was more than thrilled to be a part of.

Hair Style Trick #1: Keep Dry Shampoo Handy

Besides our face, our hair is one of the first things people notice. I recommend RAYNE CHECKING your hairstyle every 5 years or by age 30,  35, 40 and so on.

On the go and don’t have time to wash your locks? Trick: dry shampoo is a great way to freshen up oily and dirty hair. You can buy a powder, spray or mix cornstarch with cocoa powder and cinnamon for a DIY dry shampoo (tip from Las Vegas hair stylist Marlena Bansberg).

Fashion Tip #2: Dress According to Your Body Shape

Accentuate all those positives parts! Rule of thumb; wear brighter colors and patterns to the half of your body  you want to draw people’s eyes to. Tip: if you want to appear thinner wear darker colors and solids to downplay the other half.

Fashion Tip # 3: Tailor Your Core Wardrobe

To get the perfect fit for our core wardrobe, we need to take in here, hem this and add a dart there. It’s all about the fit! Trick: tailoring can make you look extra polished, MORE successful and 10 pounds thinner…for real!

Style Tip #4. Organize Your Closet Like A Boutique

Organized Closet by Style by Rayne, Rayne Parvis
Clothes organized from light to dark, tank tops to long sleeves by Rayne Parvis in Encino, California.

I find the “I have nothing to wear “ frustration” stems from a disheveled, unorganized and messy closet. A clean lay out equals a fresh approach to outfits. The more you can see, the more outfits will come to your mind. Tip: Organize your clothes by color from light to dark. Then by type of garment – skirts, pants, tanks, blouses and jackets. Sweaters, to keep their shape, can be folded and put in drawer or on a shelf. In make take a couple of weeks to get the hang of keeping your clothing color coded…but practice makes perfect. Soon it will be second nature to be neat!

Image Tip #5: Polish Those Toes

People notice your feet. If you wear open-toed shoes or sandals make sure your feet are purrrr-ty. No dirty, green, ripped, long or raggedy unpainted toe nails. Keep those dry heels under wraps too! This can ruin a look. If you don’t take care of your feet we can only imagine what else you fail to care for. If you have a toe nail that is dead and detached(pictured below)…LET IT GO! Please don’t put a band-aid on it. It will grow back. I was cracking up when I saw my friend had showed up to a brunch with her foot like this. Tip: Have the manicurist use your own nail polish. You will be able to touch up any chips or peels yourself.
